Monponsett Pond / Silver Lake: Water in Distress -- An Open Forum with Q&A
Saturday, September 24, 2016
10 AM - 11:30 AM
Halifax Town Hall
State Rep. Tom Calter is hosting an Open Forum Discussion and Q&A
session on the water problems at West Monponsett Pond, Silver Lake and Jones River that have resulted from the City of Brockton's harmful water management practices. This Forum is open to all and
residents and community members concerned about both of these precious bodies of water are encouraged to attend. In addition to Rep. Calter, speakers will include Pine DuBois, Executive Director of
the Jones River Watershed Association; Marianne Moore, Executive Secretary of the Monponsett Watershed Assciation; Cathy Drinan, Board of Health Agent for the Town of Halifax; and Rep. Josh Cutler
whose district includes Hanson. Others may be announced.
Co-hosted by Rep. Cutler.
Take the chance to learn about the parameters of the 1964 law that allowed Brockton to draw water in the first place and the City's practices that have led to water quality degradation and cyanobacteria blooms far exceeding state health standards. Hear about the work being done by the Central Plymouth County Water District Commission, the Monponsett Watershed and Jones River Watershed Associations, Rep. Tom Calter, Rep. Josh Cutler and others over the past 2+ years to push for change, the role of the DEP in negotiating a new Administrative Consent Order with Brockton to implement that change, and next steps in the process. The cyanobacteria levels have been at record high levels this summer causing real health concerns, the drought has not let up, and Brockton turned off Aquaria in late August, taking 11 million gallons+ per day from Silver Lake. Silver Lake can not withstand the continued high drawdown without even further environmental and ecological impact, and water quality of West Monponsett Pond must be restored.
This is a critical time for these three bodies of water -- please join us to learn more and get your questions answered. Please share this event announcement with friends.
Complimentary coffee & refreshments will be provided.
In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held in Great Hall of Halifax Town Hall (check back here or www.tomcalter.com for announcement if weather is in question).
