Rep. Calter has hosted 12 Substance Abuse Awareness programs for parents to raise awareness about the region's growing opiate and herion problem, and hosted Chris Herren twice at Silver Lake Regional Schools to speak to students on the same issue. These programs have also shed light on the gateway drugs and household substances that are often abused in the pathway to heavier drug use. Over 1,500 concerned adults have attended these programs which have been held around the district and elsewhere in Plymouth County.
Rep. Calter's attention and work on this critical epidemic began in 2013 after hearing repeatedly from constituents about loved ones who were struggling with, and succumbing to, addiction. His early work on bringing public attention to the issue came well before the mainstream media begain reporting on it.
Tom Audette, a Plymouth resident and a regular program panelist, shared a poem about heroin, which claimed the life of his 23-year old daughter Jillian. Attendees have asked for it to be available, and thus, we are posting it here:
